Please help my family settle a long mystery. My maternal grandfather, William Shook was born in 1864 and died in Memphis, Tennessee in 1927. Family legend is that his real surname was Abston, that his parents died ( supposedly in a fire) while he was an infant and that his maternal grandparents, the Shooks, raised him. We have understood that he was raised in or aorund Nashville, but this has not been confirmed. He used their surname but was never adopted. In honor to my grandfather and the Abston family, I named my daughter born in 1993, Samantha Abston Rose Gabbert. Please forward any information that may help in this mystery.
