Hi Sandy, You were right about a connection between the Abshire's and the Bell's of the Bell Witch Legend. Laura Bell was the mother of Mary Allen (Bell) Abshire (Molly on 1880 census). There is an amazing Bell Witch website that includes the Bell family genealogy http://www.bellwitch.org/bellfamily.htm. The entire site is interesting, but the sections on Genealogy, Adams, TN and Pictures are the best. Below are some census entries for the Bell's, a few marriage entries and a biography for Joel Bell (Mary Allen Bell's father). I found an 1850 census entry that I think is for Laura (Henry) Bell's family, although the name of the child I think is Laura is spelled Aurena (Laurina?). I checked all of the Henry families in Robertson Co on the 1850 census and this was the only one with a daughter that looked even close - so you will have to do some research on this one. I checked your other messages and noticed you were looking for information about Annie Ray Mullins' family. Found a bit, but will send it in a separate message so that the information doesn't become too cluttered. T. Bell, M. D., of Adams Station, was born April 13, 1831, near his present residence. He is the son of John and Elizabeth (Gunn) Bell. The father was of English origin, and was born in 1793 in North Carolina. He was a tiller of the soil and the son of John Bell, our subject's grandfather, who came to Robertson County about 1800, and located on Red River; he was one of the first settlers in the county. Our subject's father was living in Robertson County at the time of his marriage, which occurred in 1828. He afterward bought 640 acres near where Adams Station now is. Here he settled and passed the residue of his life. In early life he followed flat-boating on the Mississippi River, and was a soldier in the war of 1812. He died May 8, 1862. The mother was of English origin, and was born in 1806 in North Carolina, and died in 1857. Our subject received a good education in the common schools of Robertson County, Tenn., and Logan County, Ky. In 1852 he began studying medicine, and during the year 1853 he entered the Medical University of Nashville, taking two full lecture courses. He graduated as an M. D. March, 1857. After obtaining his diploma he returned to his father and commenced his practice. May 28, 1859, he married Laura Henry, a native of Tennessee, born February 18, 1842. To this union were born five children: Flora, Sallie, Boyd, Bailey and Mary. Dr. Bell inherited 207 acres of the old home place, upon which he settled and where he still lives. Mr. Bell has carried on his practice in the same vicinity for some years, and by a thorough knowledge of his profession has built up a lucrative practice. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Notify Administrator about this message?
