Abreu Ancestors
Here is what I have found so far about the Abreu family - Some info I have tried to translate as best I could from Portuguese - Comments and further help or resources would be greatly appreciated!
Abreu Family Emblem:

Abreu Surname:
Abreu is a Portugeuse surname derived from a place called Abreu in Portugal in the north west of the province of Minho. ( - I personally could not find this place? - )
During the reign of King Afonso Henriques (1185-1211), Gomes adopted the surname. Early records show that the Abreu family played an important part in the history of Portugal. (Where could these records be found?)
The earliest name of Abreu is noted in a Goncalo Rodrigues de Abreu that lived about 1090, decendants of the counts of Evreux that came from the Kings of France. Goncalo Rodrigues de Abreu came to Portugal with D. Henrique and served as a servant to King D. Afonso Henriques. He setteled near Valenca do Minho.
Goncalo Martins(/Rodrigues) de Abreu was a very wealthy man, he controlled a large area including Sanfaes, Lapela, Barbeita, Regalados and others. He acted as servant to the Queen D. Teresa and her son D. Afonso Henriques. Couldn't translate ( "e fundou para seu solar, a Torre e Honra a que dera o seu apelido, junto a Valenca do Minho." )

1190?? Gomes (/Lourenco) de Abreu – Lord of the house of Abreus . A famous warrior and was a nobleman at King D. Sancho (1185-1211)
1200?? Rui Gomes de Abreu – Lord of the house of Abreus and nobleman at King D. Sancho (1185-1211) and King D. Alfonso II (1211-1223)
1260?? Lourenco Rodrigues de Abreu – Lord of the house of Abreus and Regalados. Lived during the time of King D. Sancho II (1223-1248). and King D. Afonso III (1248 – 1279)
1290?? Gomes Lourenco de Abreu - Lord of the house of Abreus, Count of Regalados and Lord of the house of Valadares(from wife). Nobelman of the house of Real during the time of King D. Afonso III (1248 – 1279)and D. Denis (1279-1325).
1340??Lourenco Gomes de Abreu - Lord of Regalados,Barbeita, Valadares and the castles of Lapela, Melgaco and Nobelman of the house of Real
1370?? Vasco Gomes de Abreu - Lord of Valadares, Lapela, Melgaco and Honour of Abreu by grace of King D. Fernando (1367-1383)

1470?? Pedro Gomes de Abreu - Lord of Abreus, Valadares, Regalados, Rocas and patronage of Vila Boa da Roda, the rights of Moncao, Aguiar de Neiva, Terra de Pena and others of King Afonso V (1438-1481)
1520?? Lopo Gomes de Abreu – Lord of Abreus, Regalados, Valadares, Rocas, Vila Boa da Roda, Terra de Pena, Aguiar de Neiva and major of Lapela
Antonio de Abreu in 1523 a portugeus navigator explored the "Molucas" and was attributed the discovery of Australia according to reseach was from Madeira.
1570?? Pedro Gomes de Abreu - Lord of the Regalados and major of Lapela
1600?? Rui Gomes de Abreu – Major of Elvas (Bastard son?)
1620?? D. Brites de Abreu – Lady that married Joao Fernandes de Andrade ( from Arco ) in 1640 it is during this time the the decendants of Abreu came to Madeira – It is presumed that Joao Fernandes de Andrade them assumed his wife’s title of Abreu giving rise to the Abreu generation in Madeira.
The Abreu’s from Madeira (1640) are decendants of Beatriz de Abreu daughter of Rui Gomes de Abreu ( major of Evas) and granddaughter of Pedro Gomes de Abreu 4th sir of royalty.
******One problem is why is the oldest marriage of Ribeira Brava recorded as [ Husband: António de Abreu Wife: Francisca Pereira Place: Ribeira Brava Year: 1615 book: 389 page: 154 v.º] If the Abreu family only when to Madeira in 1640 as indicated in above book??? *********
