Johnny-- I spent a few days in the archives in Funchal during my month in Madeira. They have published the weddings for Ribeira Brava from the 16th century to 1892. It is easy to read. I agree that the similar names are confusing. Also the priests never gave the family name of the bride always adding of Jesus, of the saints, etc. But I think they will be publishing the baptisms and the deaths for those year in the next couple of years. You can use a combination of information to assist you. The baptisms list the grandparents on both sides of the baby's family. This helps in digging back with accurate names. Don't give up. I think you and I may be connected as my family lives in the very western part of Campanario and I believe they came from Ribeira Brava way back. Saudade
