I am interested in the French origin of the Abreu name. My family history includes a story about my great-great grandfather, who arrived in Puebla, Mexico as a soldier in Maximillian's French army in 1862. According to my family history, his name was originally Abreu, but he later changed it to Abrego after defecting to the Mexican side. His daughter was Fransisca Abrego and was born in Matamoros, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I have identified serveral listings for Abreu in the various phone directories in the Rio Grande Valley area of South Texas where I currently reside. I would like to know more about the French origin of this name.
