To any Abramson who is looking for relatives:
My name is Simon Abramson (I changed it from "Shimon" so it could be easier to pronounce). I know for a fact that everyone with the Abramson family name is somehow related. To be sure, I am only referring to those whose name was not altered at Ellis Island.Most of you will find that you have some roots in Eastern Europe, especially Russia and Poland. The word "son" is not of slavic origin. I'm not certain, but perhaps it was transferred to "Abram" via Scandinavian or Germanic connections.
Along with the major flux of Jewish migration to the United States (late 1800's/early 1900's), the first Abramsons arrived. My great-great uncle, Motsya (his mother was an Abramson), for instance, settled in Philadelphia during this period.
From then on, Abramsons migrated to places such as California, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois and Canada.
I even found two Abramsons residing in Honolulu, Hawaii!!
Many members of our family are of high social standing. There are many lawyers with our family name -- Leslie Abramson, the defense lawyer for the Menendez brothers is the better known one. Like my grandfather, Boris Abramson, some are professors. Others, such as great great great uncle, Boris Petrovich Abramson, are well-known physicians. B. Petrovich Abramson died during the siege of Leningrad (now St.Petersburg, Russia) when a Nazi bomb shell stuck him in the head.
My grandfather, grandmother, and father (Boris, Rachel, and Genrih) moved to Israel from Leningrad in 1970. My father, a Zionist, had sought religious asylum from the Soviet Union. They resided there until 1982,when they moved to Chicago, Illinois.
The Abramson family name was obviously from my father's side of the family. His father, my grandfather, was born in a section of Poland that belongs to the Ukraine today. My great-grandfather made a successful living there as a soap maker. My grandfather, Boris, however, obtained a higher education and became a physicist. During WWII, he served in the Red Army chemical weapons task
force.
Well that's more or less all that I have been told about my Abramson heritage. If any of this sounds at all familiar (no pun intended) to you, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. I'm eager to be in contact with any relatives I may have.
