In 1900, William J. Abrams was an inmate at a "National Military Home for -----" (Illegible), in Delaware, Kansas. He is listed as married.
He is listed in Peru, NE in 1880, as a widow, living with his brother-in-law, Lewis Reade.
In 1910, William J. Abrams, 76 and his wife, Esther, 70, are living at the Indiana State Soldiers Home in Wabash, Indiana. They are both listed as Married Twice - present marriage 25 years.
Neither are listed on the 1920 census.
Mr. Abrams seemed to have led an interesting life.
He is living with a farmer in Pike, Indiana in 1850
He is still in Pike in 1860, still alone, now a carpenter.
He enlisted 09 Aug 1862 with the 79th Infantry Reg, Indiana - and was mustered in 07 Jun 1865
He is in the state prison in Michigan City, Indiana in 1870, supposedly for life according to an 1871 Fort Wayne newspaper article. Something to do with the murder of a Mr. Clem in which he admitted that the passed money from Mrs. Clem to the Youngs, but he testified that he did not bring the gun that murdered Mr. Clem.
For whatever reason, he apparently got out of prison, and headed to his sister's in Peru Nebraska, met and married Hester Ralston in 1885.
What brought him to the Military Home in 1900 is a mystery, but I assume Mrs. Abrams expected him back since she remained in Peru.
Interesting puzzle. Wish I knew more about him.
