I would like to follow up on the statement "Ellen", the sister was actually Nancy "Ellen" ABNEY (b.05 Feb 1863 in Hopkins, TX & d.24 Oct 1895 in Granger, TX. She was John's 1/2 sister by Joseph's third wife, Keziah. Keziah Abney was NOT the 3d wife of Joseph Duncan Abney, as many have presumed due to her appearance in his household in the census. Keziah was Joseph's daughter in law--the wife of his youngest son Nathaniel Asa Abney. Ellen and her siblings Reuben, Catherine, and Mary appear with various families in Smith County, TX in the 1870 census (apparently mother Keziah died before 1870) They are all residing in Garden Valley, TX which is about 5 miles West of the Hopkins county line. This leaves some question as to why Ellen is listed as John’s sister on the census, unless it is simply an error on the part of the census enumerator, which it could well be. The 1860 Hopkins Co., TX has Joseph Duncan Abney as head and shows son Nathaniel’s family residing with him. Also listed in the home, as a separate family are Jordan R. Sigman, wife Clarisa and son John A.. Documents I have found indicate a relationship of the Sigman’s to the Abney’s but I have not as yet determined what it is. I will post more as I turn up new data in the TX records.
