John and Mary ABLITT (or ABLETT) from Ipswich, Suffolk
Posted by: Alan Fincher (ID *****9105) Date: October 30, 2005 at 07:34:25
  of 193

I've not posted before on this surname, but am now trying to research my ABLITT/ABLETT ancestors.

My 3 x great grandparents were John ABLITT and Mary.

My John ABBLITT was already dead by the 1851 census. I have no information about his place or date of birth, but would suspect Suffolk, probably in the 1790s.

His widow, Mary ABLITT (sometimes ABLETT), can be seen in all censuses between 1851 and 1881, living in Ipswich, Suffolk. She always shows as born in Ireland, (no further place given, unfortunately), with an indicated birth year of around 1793 to 1795. She appears to have died in Ipswich in 1882.

She had three daughters (at least), all born Ipswich area.
Ellen (b abt 1826) - my ancestor
Elizabeth (b abt 1832)
Susanna (b abt 1837)

Based on these dates, the IGI shows what could be a possible marriage for John and Mary….

26th April 1825, Coddenham, Suffolk - John ABLITT to Mary BANYARD

But I have no other evidence that this could be the one - simply the date looks about right, and Coddenham is only about 8 miles from Ipswich.

John ABLITT is declared as having been a maltster in multiple sources.

From various posts I've seen another John ABLITT born at a similar time ended up as a deportee to Australia - but he is clearly different from my John ABBLITT.

I'd obviously be delighted to contact anybody who can shed any further light on my ABLITTs

Many thanks,

Alan Fincher
