Melba:

I live in Florida, north of Pensacola. My ggf, James Abel, was born in 1797 in Old 96 District (From which Abbeville County was formed), South Carolina. Abbeville is located just across the Georgia/South Carolina border.

I don't know who my ggf's father was. Some say his name was Moses Abel who married a girl in Ireland before coming to America. Others speculate that he was son of Joseph or John Abel who were in Abbeville area as early as 1780 & served in Colonial Militia in 1780/81.

I cannot find a connection to your Joseph Abell of Virginia nor your Jeremiah Abell who moved to Edgefield SC except that Edgefield County is located a few miles south of Abbeville where my ggf was born.

Good luck in your research. I know how difficult it is. It seems like every generation of my Abel folks included a James, John, Joseph, and William.

Ernie
