I have much the same information Virginia has previously posted. The Peter Abler (Abeler) for whom I have information was born in Mannebach, Germany on 1 March 1837, the son of Johann Nikolaus Abeler and Anna Barbara Jung. Emigrated with his parents and siblings to Mount Calvary WI in 1846. Census and land records are confusing, as Johann may have been inconsistent in the use of both first and last names (somtimes Johann Nikolaus, sometimes Nikolaus Johann, sometimes John, sometimes Abeler, and somtimes Abler). It's good to have Carla's information, as we've been trying to figure out for some time whether there was a direct connection between the Hoven SD Ablers and those that originated in the Wisconsin Holyland. Johann Nikolaus of Mannebach, incidentally, is my great-great-grandfather.

From my limited investigations, it appears that there are several streams of Abelers/Ablers that came to the US. The surname Abler is in evidence even before the American Revolution, I think. Others appear in Texas and Missouri at various times, both before and after J.N. came in 1846, with or without some others. I think most Ablers now in the US derive from the Wisconsin Holyland tribe, but it's highly likely that other Abelers went to other destinations at about the same time, as there was wholesale emigration from the Rhineland in the early 1840s. From other information I've seen it'
s clear that people bearing the surname Abler have emigrated from Austria and Italy in addition to Germany, well after the 1840s outpouring.

My primary interest is the Holyland group, but always eager to learn about others.
