Dear fellow Abeyta-check out http://pages.prodigy.net/bluemountain1/bonmf2.htm-on the Ist Abeyta to come to New Mexico-He was from Durango N.M. The Basque origin was only an educated guess of the good historian and geneaologist Fray Angelico Chavez-however this remains to be documented. Durango was the eccleastical center of N.M. until the American occupation-and the de Veitia family was settled there. My paternal Grandmother Igancia Abeyta Carrillo was from "Los Abeytas, a few miles south of Sabinal. Hope this helps
