The story goes that my great-grandfather, Luis Torres, was born Luis Abeyta. However, his parents were killed in an Indian raid and he and his siblings were taken in by a Torres family. The children's surname was changed to Torres. Luis Torres was born in the 1800's. He married Lorenza Torres from Salem, New Mexico where they made their home. They had several children. Their son, Juan Torres is my grandfather. We can trace Lorenza's roots a little further in that her mother came to New Mexico from Spain with her parents and her daughter Lorenza. She homesteaded in Salem. There is no mention of Juana's husband, so it is believed that she was a widow or was never married. If anyone has any information on the connection between the Abeyta family and the Torres family, I would greatly appreciate it. At present, no one in my family has any information as to who our Abeyta relatives might be.
