Just thought I would let everyone know, I am an Abeyta. My dads name is Carlos, born in 1916. His dad, my grandfather, born in 1889, is Sylvestre, and my great grandfather also called Sylvestre was born in a village called Bosque, New Mexico in 1863. I have gone further back but am unable to define dates. I have determined that the Abeyta family is spaniad and did come from Spain, the basque region and that they arrived in Veracruz Mexico and went north into New Mexico when it was still a part of Mexico. The family settled first near Bernalillo, NM and as they increased, spread further north into what is now southern colorado. They established themselves, primarily in the Villages of Sabinal, Abeytas, Belen, Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Espanola, and Chimiyo, New Mexico. and in the San Luis Vally of Southern Colorado. The greatest concentration of Abeytas' is in the middle Rio Grande Valley, between Socorro and Bernalillo, New Mexico. The local indians took on the name of Abeyta, but, they spelled it: Abeita. The indians of the Isleta reservation south of Albuquerque and their brethern just south of El Paso, carry the Abeita name, but are not spanish. Most of the families were sheep herders or farmers. They were considered in the 17th century to be the best of sheep herders.
