NC to Bollinger/Wayne Co., MO bet. 1840-1850

My great great great grandfather's name was James Marion Abernathy. He was born in NC abt. 1833. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Kinder, was born in MO in abt. 1841.

They and their children are in the 1870 census for Bollinger County, MO. The 1850 census for Wayne County, MO lists a James Abernathy of the right age with the head of household listed as Frederick Abernathy, age 58 (so born abt. 1791). Others in the house: Selina, 28; John, 20; Wesley 10; (and James, 17); all born in NC. Further down Ira Abernathy (age 35, born in NC) is listed as head of household (wife and kids all born in MO).

From what I've been able to gather online it seems like this may connect with the Robert Abernathy who arrived in the colonies in 1652. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
