Linda,

Of the several John Abernathy/Abernethys born within a year or two of that date which I have in my database, I can rule out several right away, and am left with two possibles, one a strong contender.

For the 1880 census, I show an 11 yr old John Abernathy living near Dallas in Gaston County, son of Miles and Dovie (Bumgarner) Abernathy. I also show an 11 yr old John Abernathy living near Ironton in Lincoln County, son of Franklin and Susan (Hanks) Abernathy.

Miles & Dovie's household shows sons Marion (12), John (11) Pickens (9), and Daniel E, (5) and daughters Mary A. (7), Sarah J. (3), and Nancy E. (1). My notes also indicate that Pickens' full name may have been Richard Pickens Abernathy. For what that's worth.

Franklin and Susan's household shows sons Luther (22), Horace (14), Charles (13) and John (11), with recently married elder brother Marcus living next door.

Do you have any idea from your friend of John's possible siblings' names? While the Dallas household of Miles and Dovie looks like a sure winner, I fear you may need that information to be absolutely positive you don't cross-link two families, as has occasionally happened.
