I have seen the marriage documents for Mary Abernethy and David Leslie dated 1320. It was in the archives of the Hunterian collection in Glasgow. Awesome collection . The document stated that they remained married for 6 months and a day and she mysteriously died shortly after. She was therefore, as the last Head of the clan, deprived of the Abernethy lands and title which went to her husband David Leslie. At the time, the Picti tradition of matriarchy was followed. (You ALWAYS know who your mother is) Thus, when she remained married to David for more than six months, she lost her birthright to him. Strictly speaking, it was legal but, there was probably some foul play involved, as was usually the case under such circumstances. This is also why we are a sept clan of the Leslies and no longer have a tartan, it was decided that the family identity was troublesome to the Clan Leslie so it was eliminated. Oh, the webs we weave. I've got a lot of "stuff" from Scotland and Photos of the town of Abernethy, the round tower and Church of St Kilbrides in Abernethy as well as Photos of the Abernethy Hill walk through the Glen of Abernethy. There is also a digital map. E mail me back
