As the Capitol of the Pictish Kingdoms in Scotland Abernethy has two unique features, one is the Round tower,built sometime around 1100 but on old foundations and the other is the Church of St Kilbride, the oldest Christian church in Scotland. It is notable that there are no gravestoves of the family in the churchyard of St Kilbrides, they were all disinterred and scattered to the four winds after the second Battle of DunBar by Cromwells troops,who while deporting those prisoners that were not put to the sword,wished to eradicate the name as well as the family itself. Few Abernethy family members live there today.
It seems that the Name Abernethy originates from the fact that the Earn river comes to the Tay esuary at that point where the town exists today. Gaelic "Ab ern a tay" Where the earn meets the Tay. This seems to me to be the most plausible origin of the ancient name, as rivers and estuaries rarely move and defined territories absolutely. My research was conducted at the Genealogical archives in Glasgow Scotland. They are among the largest libraries of this type of information anywhere.If you've got Scottish roots it's all here.
