During a recent visit to the Lincoln County Library in Lincolnton, NC, I found a document in the Abernethy family file concerning the origin of the Abernethy family in America. The document contains information reportedly copied at the Office of Public Records on Chancery Lane in London. It says that Robert Abernethy was a 19-year-old captain under General Leslie and that he was taken prisoner during the Battle of Worchester. He was given a choice of the Tower of London or life as an indentured agricultural servant in the Colonies. He chose the latter and was shipped to Virginia in October 1651. His father is listed as George Abernethy de Barrie. The document is dated October 8, 1976 in London, England. It says the research was done one year earlier in October 1975, by Frances Jones Kirmayer. Can any Abernethy researcher verify the validity of this document? Was Kirmayer a London-based researcher? Can anyone verify her existence? Thanks - Bob Bowen - bbowen1919@home.com
