Lokking for any information, documented or otherwise, on my ancestor, David Abernathy, b. 1790-95, NC, who moved to TN (possibly Maury/Giles Cos.) about 1811 or thereabouts. This person (if the same) moved to Shelby Co., AL before the 1830 census, and to Macon Co., AL before 1844, and not seen there after the 1855 Alabama census.
He had strong Methodist ties, and his son, (Meth. Episc.) Rev. Joseph T. Abernathy, b. 1/4/1824, TN married Sarah Elizabeth Mobley, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Mobley, in 1844 in Macon Co., and moved to Coosa Co., AL by 1855, dying there of typhus, in 1859, while riding the Socapatoy Circuit.
The above David Abernathy is thought to have been the son of Joseph Abernathy, b. 1749, son of David Abernathy Sr., son of Robert Abernathy III, but may be instead, the nephew of Joseph, and not his son. It has been suggested that he may be instead, the David Abernathy who descends from the James Abernathy who married Elizabeth Cox, daughter of Henry Cox and Judith Hughes. This is the family of George Cox, son of Bartholomew Cox and Martha Stratton, and of Stephen Hughes and Judith Tarleton. These Tarleton's appear to descend from John Bolling (great grandson of Pocahontas) and Mary Kennon.
This above is very interesting to me, as my ancestor, Richard Dean, was brought to Henrico/Goochland Co., VA from England in 1713, by John Bolling, apprenticed to him for 7 years, living next to him and Bartholomew and George Cox, and marrying a Sarah Cox, who is thought to have come from the George Cox line.
To make a long story short, and omitting the details; the Dean's married into my Duke family, and many of them then married into my Abernathy family. I have always suspected some kind of an earlier Dean-Abernathy connection, and this may be it.
Any info on the above David b. 1790 NC will be greatly appreciated.
