Elizabeth,
I now have a copy of the original 1756, 1757 Granville County, NC, tax list thanks to Mr. Rackley who abstracted the tax lists into his book. The list does not have the number "4" anywhere on it and Mr. Rackley did leave off one of the Robert Abernathys. The original list has a line drawn and below that the name Robert Abernathy Jr, below that Robert Abernathy SR, with some writing after Robert Srs name either mile or male and I can't figure out what that is doing there but there is a tear in the paper after the word mile or whatever, on the next line is James Abernathy & negroes, then the next line Adam, Will, and Sue. There is a number 1 after each of the two Roberts and maybe a 1 after James Abernathy except part of the small tear is where that would be. Then another line drawn which very distinctly separates this Abernathy family from everyone else on this tax list. I think James Abernathy to be the son of Robert Abernathy and Ann somebody, Robert being on this 1757 tax list. I don't have any idea what her surname is, but Robert Abernathy with Ann would be the son of Robert Abernathy and Mary Harwell, then Robert Abernathy with Christine Tillman
or Parham and then the Robert Abernathy and Sarah Cubisha. James would then be in the 5th generation of Abernathys whose ancestor Robert came over from Scotland. Is that accurate? Adam, Will and Sue have proven to me that James Abernathy is the son of Robert Abernathy and Ann who moved to Lincoln County and could have written his father's will and left his self off, having already gotten his inheritance. I better quit now. By the way, Abernathy is spelled with and "a" instead of "e" on this list.

Charlie Abernathy, and P.S. thanks to those ladies on the US Genweb sites of Granville and Bute and to Mr. Rackley
