Answering your questions in no particular order. (1) James Abercrombie (1740) was "apparently" a loyalist and came close to being hanged during and shortly after the war. James Abercrombie (1765) was young. I have not checked out his Revolutionary War participation, if any. (2) Mary Ann Leigh is totally BOGUS as a wife of James (1765) and is not supported by any documentation that ANYONE has provided. In short, wipe Mary Ann Leigh from your mind. Your ancestor IS Mary Ann Beck, second wife of James (1765). (3) I do think John had a son named James, just not the James (1765) that was a son of James (1740). (4) The only Abercrombies documented by me are those in my recent post regarding the Marriages of James Abercrombie (1740). But, surely there were more of the original Abercrombie family in America. (5) Most of our Abercrombie cousins got Hannah Pickard correct, but one generation off. There were a lot of James Abercrombies! (6) Marriages were usually very young for the female and early 20s for the men. They needed large families to help working the land, etc. I never connected James (1740) specifically with Hannah Pickard until I started looking more closely at James and Rebecca and the marriage of their daughter Mary in Pennsylvania. Notice the James and John turn up in South Carolina shortly after Mary's marriage and the Abercrombie family migration south. I hope the above gives some clarity to your questions. Tony Schoonover
