Hope nobody will be upset for my two cents worth from my files on Sims, Abercrombie, Dial, Thompson, Babb, Kellett and many more.

In my respectful opinoin, Colvill Dial was named after my GGGG Grandfather, Colvill Abercrombie, Sr.. It appears that Colvill Abercrombie, Sr. was well liked and his given name "Colvill" continued in his own descendants as well as with relatives. His son, Colvill Abercrombie, Jr. was born 4 october 1793 in Laurens Co., SC and died 26 August 1838 and is buried in the Babb Family Cemetery in Henry County, Georgia. He, Colvill Abercrombie, Jr. married Sara Mahaffey before 1820 where?. Her parents were Hugh Mahaffey (1775-1846) and wife Rachel.
Unfortunately, I don't have anything proving dates or order of the children born to Colvill Abercrombie, Jr. and wife Sara Mahaffey, but do show a son, Colvill Abercrombie, III, born 8 September 1831 where? and died 5 December 1863 (Civil War?).

Children of Colvill Abercrombie, Jr. & wife Sara Mahaffey:
Source: Mostly from Mrs. Willard Miles Hearn and Ray F. Abercrombie:

Lucinda Malinda Abercrombie
b. 4 september 1820 where?
d. 14 june 1870 where?
said never married.

Rachel Abercrombie
b. 8 September 1822 where?
d. 30 January 1883 where?
said never married.

Colvill Abercrombie, III
b. 8 September 1831 where?
d. 5 December 1863 where? (Civil War?)
unknown if he married.

Mary Abercrombie
b. abt. 1834 where?
d. when? where?
husband: Edward F. Bradberry

Kellet M. Abercrombie
b. when? where?
d. when? where?
m. 24 January 1867 where?
wife: Elizabeth Avery

John Abercrombie
b. when? where?
d. when? where?
m. 11 February 1847 where?
wife: Elizabeth Jane Bradberry

Rebecca Abercrombie
b. when? where?
d. when? where?
unknown if she married.

Without having dates of birth of some of the children is is not possible to determine if the first son was named for the father of Colvill Abercrombie, III or if the 2nd son was named for the father of Sara (Mahaffey) Abercrombie. Also, unable to determine if the first daughter was named for the mother of Colvill Abercrombie, III or if the second daughter was named for the mother of Sara (Mahaffey) Abercrombie.

With regard to Dial ancestry, I do have a copy of a book "MARTIN DIAL and Related Families" by Hastings Harrison.

It is interesting to see that Henry Arthur Dial and wife Isabella Mae Hastings are showing as the parents of: Hastings Dial and his sibling/brother, Martin Dial, as well as James Dial, Isaac Dial, Mary Dial, and Isabella Dial. While there appears to be no date of birth for James, Isaac, or Mary, evidence does support that Hastings Dial was the first born son and as such inherited the family wealth of his father, Henry Arthur Dial.
He, Hastings Dial, is reported to have held the rank of Colonel in the British Army during the Revolutionary War.
Also interesting is that said Hastings Dial and wife Rebecca Abercrombie may not have named their first born son for Hasting's father, Henry Arthur Dial. Rather, it appears the first born son of Hastings Dial and wife Rebecca Abercrombie was named Hastings Dial, b. 1769 and died 1850. He married about 1808 to Mary Allen.
From the said book and as best as I can determine, the children born to Hastings Dial and wife Rebecca Abercrombie; as follows:

1) Hastings Dial, Jr.
b. 1769 North Carolina
d. 1850 Laurens Co., SC.
wife: Mary Allen

2) James Dial
b. 6 June 1770 North Carolina
d. before 1830 Laurens Co., SC.
wife: Elizabeth Stallworth

3) Isaac Malcom Dial
b. 19 February 1772 where?
d. 18 March 1835 Laurens Co., SC.
wife: Nancy Amanda Coker

4) Rebecca Dial
b. abt. 1773? where?
d. when? where?
husband: James Johnson

5) Mary Dial
b. abt. 1774 Laurens Co., SC.
d. after 1850 where?
husband: Mabram Madden

6) Isabella Dial
b. abt. 1778 Laurens Co., SC.
d. when? where?
husband: John Woody

7) Henry Arthur Dial
b. abt. 1780 Laurens Co., SC.
d. abt. 1790 abt. age 10 years old.

8) Jane Dial
b. abt. 1802 Laurens Co., SC.
d. when? where?
husband: Abraham Madden
Note: In my opinion, Jane Dial, may have been a granddaughter of Hastings Dial and wife Rebecca Abercrombie.
Note: Rebecca Abercrombie is shown as having been born 4 February 1739 and died 1 June 1825. She and husband, Hastings Dial are both buried in the Dial Family Cemetery in laurens County, South Carolina.

If the above dates of birth of the children of Hastings Dial and wife Rebecca Abercrombie are correct, that seems to shoot a very big hold in the tradition of the first born son being named for the father of the groom.

Turning now to Hasting's sibling/brother, Martin Dial:

Martin Dial
b. 30 December 1744 probably in North Wales, England
d. 26 December 1804 Laurens County, South Carolina
m. abt. 1775 likely in Laurens Co., SC.
wife: Christie Abercrombie
b. abt. 1746 where? Virginia?
d. 4 January 1804 Laurens Co., SC.
Also, a note saying she was a 1st Cousin to Colvill Abercrombie, Sr.
Note: Martin Dial and wife Christie Abercrombie are both buried in the Dial Family Cemetery in laurens County, South Carolina.
Note: Martin Dial held the rank of Pvt. and served in the Company of Colonel Hayes or Hays During the Revolutionary War. Word is that he was captured by the British and was to be hanged, but was spared that by his sibling/brother, Colonel Hastings Dial of the British Army.
From my books about the history of Laurens Co., SC., It seems likely that Martin Dial was a Pvt. in the South Carolina Militia. Also, my GGGG Grandfather, Clayborn Sims, is reported as having been at Colonel Hayes Station, but was sent out for corn before the station was attacked and burned by Bloody Bill Cunningham and his band of Tories and Loyalits. Colonel Hayes and most of his command were shot or hacked to death or hanged. This is from the book about the history of Laurens Co., SC. as well as the book about the Sullivan and Dunklin Families of Laurens and Greenville Counties, SC.
Note: I do have certified copies of the Military and Pay records of my GGGG Grandfather, Clayborn Sims and his sibling/brother, William Sims proving both had the rank of Pvt. with the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Both served after the fall of Charleston to the British. The original documents are on file at the Archives in Columbia, SC. My wife and I drove there some years back and were allowed to hold and read the original documents from which the certified copied were made for us.

Children born to Martin Dial and wife Christie Abercrombie:

1) John Hasings Dial
b. abnt. 1782 Laurens Co., SC.
d. after 1860 Tennessee - where in TN?
wife: Christie Thomason - not Thompson!

2) Hannah Dial
b. abt. 1783 Laurens Co., SC.
d. before 1850/51 likely in Laurens Co., SC.
husband: Captain, John Armstrong

3) Colvill Dial
b. abt. 1785 Laurens Co., SC.
d. 1859 Randolph Co., AL.
wife: Lydia Eastwood

4) James Dial
b. abt. 1787 Laurens Co., SC.
d. after 1860 Tennessee - probably in Franklin County
wife: Sarah Stoddard

5) Martin Dial, Jr.
b. abt. 1789 Laurens Co., SC.
d. Dec. 1842 Walton Co., GA.
wife: Jane Eastwood

6) Issac Dial
b. 10 March 1791 Laurens Co., SC.
d. 30 April 1864 Walton Co., GA.
wife: Miss. Gibson

7) Jonathan Dial
b. abt. 1794 Laurens Co., SC.
d. after 1860 Laurens Co., SC.
said never married.

8) William Dial
b. 1798 Laurens Co., SC.
d. 4 Aug. 1854 Laurens Co., SC.
wife: Hannah Hellams

Here again we see the first born son of Martin Dial and wife Christie Abercrombie was apparently not named for the father of Martin Dial. That is, unless there was a son born before John Hastings Dial. Unfortunately, the date of marriage between Martin Dial and Christie Abercrombie is only speculated at as about 1775.

Note: Colvill Dial and wife Lydia Eastwood had a a son, Johnson Dial, born 28 May 1817 in Laurens Co., SC. and died 4 March 1895 near Delta, Clay Co., AL. He, Johnson Dial 1st married Nancy R. Lee on 15 Oct. 1849 in Walton Co., GA. She, Nancy R. Lee, was a widow of Matson Lee.
Ref: Marriage Book "D" page 67 for the marriage between Matson Lee and Nancy R. Dial. Her parents were Isaac Dial and wife Sarah Thomason. Therefore, Johnson Dial and wife Nancy R. (Dial) Lee were Cousins.
Anyway, Johnson Dial and wife Nancy R. (Dial) Lee had a son William Coleman Dial, born 21 Aug. 1850 in Walton Co., GA. and died 23 Aug. 1919 at Rt. 2, Lincoln, now Clay County, Alabama. He, William Coleman Dial married 12 Dec. 1872 in Clay Co., Al to Callia Andrea Sims. Ref: Book "A" page 30. Note, Callia Andrea Sims was a Granddaughter of my GGG Grandparents, Hiram Sims, Sr. and wife Mary Abercrombie. She, Mary (Abercrombie) Sims, was a daughter of Colvill Abercrombie and wife Mary Lindley. This is proven by the 1835 Last Will and Testament of Colvill Abercrombie who died in 1847 in Laurens Co., SC. I do have a copy of that original document in which he, Colvill Abercrombie, names among others of his children, his daughter Mary, wife of Hiram Sims.
Note: The 1800 census for Laurens Co., SC. shows my GGGG Grandfather, Clayborn Sims, residing next to Colvill Abercrombie there in Laurens Co., SC. Further, Colvill's daughter, Ruth Abercrombie, married Alfred Franklin Sims, a younger sibling/brother to my GGG Grandfather, Hiram Sims, Sr.

Back to Delta, Clay Co., AL.; My wife and I have visited there a number of times and met with my Sims and Dial relatives in the area. Yes, some reside there to this day.
The Providence Methodist Church Cemetery by State Lake Road out from Delta, AL. is full of graves of Sims and Dials as well as many more relatives. Could give names of living relatives, but they might not appreciate that on the internet. My own direct Sims GG Grandparents acquired 160 acres of land near Delta, Clay Co., AL. in 1853 and remained there for their life times. They, my GG Grandparents, are Clayborn Sims and wife Susannah Waldrop. They married 2 July 1835 in Henry Co., GA. Yes, I do have a certified copy of their marriage record from Henry Co., GA. They are both buried in the old Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery located out from Delta, AL. on State Lake Road then turn onto Indian Creek Road and drive top the top of a high hill which is where that old cemetery is located. It is not far from the present day Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Cemetery and also near the Providence Mentodist Church and Cemetery by State Lake Road out from Delta, AL.

For what it's worth, I'm inclined to beleive that my GGGG Grandfather, Colvill Abercrombie, Sr., was a son of John Abercrombie and 1st wife Sarah Mitchell. It would be wonderful to discover some proof one way or another.
Sadly, this may be one of those areas lost forever to us.

Charles E. Sims
