In a limited research on "early American" Quakers , it would appear that they were STRONGLY opposed to any form of slavery. Accordingly, I wouldn't think a son of James (circa 1740) would be a Quaker or would later become a Quaker as a young adult. Considering our recent joint research, it is likely your James (see 1790 Federal Census) is the James Abercrombie family shown with two males under 16 and five females. The first son could have been a son named Colvill that died sometime after the taking of the 1790 Federal Census. Said James would be a likely brother of the Colvil family shown in the same 1790 census. It appears members of the Colvil/Lindley family were for the most part Quakers. A sister of Colvill (see said 1790 census) was Chrystie. She married into the Hastings Dial family. Maybe that is the link to the Hastings Dial Abercrombie (1826) shown as a likely son of your James? Let's continue our research and exchange of thoughts. We may even bring some light to the overall genealogical mystery concerning our greater Abercrombie Family!
