JAMES ABERCROMBIE (1740-1819)

I respectfully offer the following for consideration. I am convinced James Abercrombie (birth shown by various researchers between 1758-1764) is NOT the son of John Abercrombie (1736-1816), but the son of John's younger brother James (1740). It is generally agreed by Abercrombie researchers that James (1740) was married twice. His will probated in 1819 lists a son and grandson, both named James Abercrombie. In a review of said probated will, awareness of certain litigation brought against the estate of James (1740) by his daughter and son-in-law, a review of the 1790 Federal Census records for all Abercrombie families in NC, SC and GA, a review of a Jackson County, GA (1805) census, awareness of Abercrombie newborn naming patterns, the two James Abercrombie families in the 1790 Federal Census shown living near to the other...more so than the John Abercrombie family, I feel strongly that said proposed lineage is correct. The only James with a FIRST son of a proper age...with a FIRST son named James is the James Abercrombie (1758-1764) mentioned above. The birth of the younger James is probably 1760...give or take a year. Although, the 1790 Federal Census for James (1740) does show three males in the same household with James (1740), one is a known stepson named Archibald, the other two males possibly another stepson or son(s) that died young. Using the known naming pattern during the period, James (1760) would have surely named his FIRST son after his father. Further, the first known daughter of James (1760) was Hannah (1779). A Hannah Pickard or similar spelling was the likely first wife of James (1740) and the mother of James (1760). Normally, the first daughter would have been named after the maternal grandmother (probably in this case a Nancy). But, his first daughter was likely named Hannah in honor of his deceased mother and first wife of James (1740).
