Need a little help on where to begin -researching Tiriac & Abenaki (Swanton, VT)

Hello - My family has always had a story of a family member marrying an Indian. My research thus far places my gggg grandfather Alexis Tiriac (Thiriac, Teriac, Thiriaque, or Thiriac dit Laforest) in Swanton VT upon his death. My question is where and who do I contact to find the connection to the Abenaki? I suspect the connection comes somewhere around my ggg grandfather (who is also an Alexis)and his marriage to Josphete Julia Commeau (como). They to lived in Swanton, VT area for a spell. My gggrandfather also changed his surname to Rapponeau while living in MA approx in the 1870's. It seemed to be a name he was given, since even his marriage record states called "Rapponeau". I would appreciate any help on where to begin.
