The first "proven" Abell ancestor in Maryland is Samuel Abell. Various written records, including his will, attest to that. The question before us is the name of his father.
In an unpublished and undated (probably from the late 1980's) ms., William Russell Abell convinces me that the name was Richard, not Captain Robert. Russ's main argument is that the record for Richard shows him as a resident, while the record for Captain Robert does not.
