"WILLIAM ABELL - Born Huntington county, N.J., Nov. 12, 1836; learned printing at Flemington, N.J., beginning in 1851; came to Providence June 1, 1870, first working for A. Crawford Greene and later on the Journal, and losing his situation by the strike of 1875. In October, 1876, he became foreman of the Taunton Gazette, holding the position until May, 1878. He then returned to Providence and was foreman of the Rhode Island Democrat and of the Mail, and worked on the Press and for eight years on the Weekly Visitor. Before coming to Providence, he published a weekly paper in Clinton, N.J., 1858 - 1862, and in Hackettstown, N.J., 1862 - 1867. He also published a weekly paper in East Providence for a short time in 1903. Mr. Abell joined Providence Union by card Dec. 9, 1871. He was financial secretary in 1874, and again from 1895 to 1903, and in 1905 until Nov. 26 of that year; delegate in 1898; President in 1894. He is a resident of this city and active in union work.
