Age 76, a former owner of the old Norfolk Landmark and part owner of the Norfolk

in suburban Chevy Chase, Maryland. His death was attributed to a heart attack. He was at one

Virginian-Pilot under the control of the Virginian-Pilot officers and staff. In the mid-1920's, he
went to Washington, where he became business manager of the Washington Post. Later he
returned to Norfolk and was in the business office of the Virginian-Pilot for several years before
retiring to his Chevy Chase home. He became a stockholder in Norfolk Newspapers Inc., when
the Ledger-Dispatch and the Virginian-Pilot merged on January 1, 1933. In recent years, his
stock in the Norfolk Newspapers Inc. has been represented by his son, WILLIAM S. ABELL.
