Robert Abell and Margaret Mills emigrated to Kentucky in 1788. In 1790 they were followed by a brother-in-law Benedict Spalding whose wife was Aletha Abell. At he head of a colony of emigrants from St Mary's County Maryland most of whom settled on lands bordering the Rolling Fork River, in Marion County Kentucky . The children of Benedict Spalding and Aletha Abell Spalding were : Joseph m narried Elizabeth Moore, William married Elizabeth Thompson, Ignatius married Ann Pottinger, Benedict married Mary Hamilton, Ann married Clement Hamilton, Ellen married Basil Riney, Elizabeth married John Wathen , Catherine married Col. Richard Forrest, Mary married Henry H. Wathen, Aletha married Francis Sims and Thomas Married Susan Abell
Richard Spalding who married Henrietta Hamilton were the parents of seven children, two of whom became priests. They were Martin J and Benedict J Spalding . Martin J Spalding was made a Bishop and then an Archbishop.
