Abell/Hammond Question

I have found the 1850 Indiana census for William M. Hammond married to Jane Abell. All but the first child Elizabeth are listed as being born in Iowa and Jane born in India. I'm really pretty sure a mistake has been made in the transcibing of the census and Iowa was mistaken for an abbreviation of of Indiana and the same with India. Are there any Abells or Hammonds who would know for sure this is a mistake? The census took place in Fulda, Spencer Co. Indiana. I am trying to trace William and Janes families. Thanks, Colleen Rowe
