Would enjoy comparing notes with others working on this family. It seems a lot of undocumented claims are being made about this prolific family, and I would enjoy getting to the truth about George and his family. The first claim that I have seen no proof of is that his wife was Elizabeth Crawford (d/o Josiah Crawford). My own research would indicate that George had two wives: (1) Catharine ----- [fl. 1766-1786], and (2) Elizabeth Brewer [who was alive as late as 1840].
The first wife Catharine was the mother of the early children of George who were christened at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in St Mary's Co, MD.
The second wife Elizabeth (Brewer) Abell was the mother of at least three daughters:
1. Caroline Abell [over 21 in 1821] m. 1821 Nelson Co, KY to Francis Thornberry.
2. Milly Abell [d. 30 May 1853]
3. Judith Abell [mother of a natural daughter Julia Ann Abell].
Elizabeth (Brewer) Abell came from a Catholic family, and seems to have raised her daughters in that faith. The earlier Abells in Maryland were Episcopal in their faith.
Would appreciate any input on this family, especially if it is backed up with documentation.
