My grandfather was from St. Mary's County Maryland. The family history he wrote which included some letters especially for the Civil war. Indicated that the family had moved from Scotland and settled in Maryland. Even though it is possible Abell's moved from Massachussettes and settled there. Those related to Capt Robert Abell settled and stayed in Maryland until the early to mid 1900's when my grandfathers family moved to Louisiana and then Texas. His name was Henry Frank Abell. I've forgotten his fathers name but will find out if you are interested in pursuing this line of thought.
