I am a descendant of Benjamin Abell, brother to Caleb Abell. In the book, "The Abell Family in America", it states," Several branches of the Abell family lived in the County of Derby, England, in the sixteenth century. One branch lived in Creighton and Uttoxeter. The brothers John and Richard Abell were the progenitors of this branch. Richard died before 1536. Henry Abell who died in 1540 was the earliest known of another branch, living in Sommersall. A third branch of the Abell family lived in Norbury. The earliest found of this branch was Nicholas Abell, who died about 1557. Most of the American Abells are descendants of Robert Abell, who lived in Stapenhill, also in the County of Derby. There is a probability that all the branches of the Abell family in the County of Derby were descendants of a common ancestor."
"In the will of Anthonye Abell, son of Robert, dated May 29, 1559, Inventory June 3, 1559, Lichfield: " Anthonye Abell, of Ticknall, gent. To be buried in"Church of Tycknall as near the place of the Bodie of Elizabeth Abell my late wif as my bodye may be convenyentlie layed." Ticknall is in Co. Derby. There is also a place called Nether Seale, co. Leicester mentioned in the will of George Abell, son of Robert, dated May 3, 1596. The family also owned a farm in Stapenhill, co. Derby. George Abell of Stapenhill, father of Robert Abell, the first immigrant, was also from Hemington, co. Leicester, where he married Frances Cotton. "George Abell, buried Sept. 13, 1630. Parish Register, Church at Lockington, Leicestershire, England."
The book also states this about Caleb Abell.
"7. Sergt. Caleb Abell, born 1646 probably in Rehoboth, Mass.; died August 7, 1731 in his 85th yr. (inscription on gravestone in Norwich, Conn.); married Margaret Post July 1669 in Norwich, born February 21, 1653 in Saybrook, died November 1700 in Norwich, daughter of John and Hester (Hyde) Post. Hester Hyde daughter of William Hyde who married Sergt. Caleb's mother Joanna Abell. He married 2nd, Mary Miller, June 25, 1701, born 1687, died after August 7, 1731. She was the widow of Stephen Loomer of New London, Conn., and daughter of George Miller.
Sergt. Caleb Abell is first mentioned in the Colonial records at Dedham in 1665, petitioned for Freeman in Dedham, May 3, 1665; in 1668 moved to Norwich, Conn. In the original purchase of land when Norwich was settled, six acres having 16 rods front was assigned to Robert Wade, this he sold to Caleb Abell in 1677 and it was afterwards known as the Abell homestead." "Caleb joined the first church of Norwich before 1701. He was Sergeant of the Norwich Train Band in 1701and Selectman in 1682, Constable in 1684 and 1706 and Townsman in 1689. In the book of Grants in Norwich, there were 38 or more items to Caleb Abell." The book goes on with his will.
