Hey all Abeles!
I don't know if anyone cares any more, since this is so old, but here's what I know about Abele name from Italy:
My Grandfather told me that two brothers came to Germany a "long" time ago, and that's the origin of the German family. He sees things through European eyes, where they call things that are 200 years old "new", so how long ago, who knows?
From Italy these two settled somewhere on the German boarder... he used a German word to refer to the area, it meanst something like 'fair weather friends', so somewhere that has been German/French at different times. There is a town in Flemish Belgium named Abele, so that's a possible link. I know my family have relatives in Stuttgart area and Geingen und der Brenz who we still visit and keep in touch with.
I think the name means some sort of tree?
Abella is exactly how Germans pronounce Abele. The name may have been spelled differently MANY years ago.
