Abele-surname origins

Hi, I am looking for info on my grandfathers lineage. The name is Abella(an Americanized version of Abele?) and we believed he (we) had Italian roots, but I am finding almost no Abeles, Abellas or even Abellos from Italy. My grandfather's name was Art, his brother was James. They lived in Cleveland Ohio the first half of the 20th century (Art died young from jungle rot right after WWII). Any insight into the origin of the Abella name , why we would believe it to be Italian-when clearly it isn't, or about the Abella family of Cleveland specifically would be greatly appreciated.
