This is a long shot, but do you have any Bates relatives?
My ggrandfather was John Shelby Bates b.1864 in MS, d. 1921 in Humphreys Co., MS. On the 1880 Holmes Co., MS census there is a James Abel age 55(I think that's what it says).His wife was Rachel. Living with them were
Mary Bates, age 20, niece
John Bates, age 15, nephew
James Bates,age 13, nephew
I don't know that this is my John, but the age is right, and I can't find him anywhere else.
