Affidavit of William Abbett

South Carolina
Pickens District

Before me personally appeared William Abbett, an old and respectable, truthful citizen of this District and made Oath in due form of law, that in his youth he knew John Cobb (late of this District &a Revolutionary pensioner & reputed Soldier) and Frances Smith: that Cobb lived about a mile from him; & Smith the Father of Frances, lived about three miles from him, that the said Cobb was married to the said Frances Smith as he understood at the time & by O. Trimmier Esq in Spartanburg District, that he was not at the wedding. He thinks the marriage took place from the best calculations that he can make by his own age is either the year 1788 or 1789. He is certain it was previous to the first day of January 1794 and that the said John Cobb took the said Frances Smith to his house & they lived together as husband & wife ever since, until the death of the old man which took place a few years ago, as this deponent has known ever since and lived not far from them & never heard it doubted but that they were lawfully married.

Wm Abbett
