The BOWLES were among the families researched by Paul Heinegg where he found they were longtime free people of color since at least 1725. No record of who her parents may have been but she is listed among the records on his website:

BOWLES
iii. Caty, head of an Albemarle County household of 4 "other free" in 1810 [VA:185].
