I am a white Hopkins descendant working on my family line.
I am currently researching William(1760-1841) & Elizabeth Downing Hopkins(1760-185?). They owned a large farm near Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Queens Co., Long Island, NY.
In the 1850 US Federal Census Elizabeth Hopkins, widow, is listed as head of household. Besides her family members are listed Jordan Hopkins, black male age 85; Rosetta Hopkins, black female age 45 and Silas Hopkins, black male age 50. I haven't seen the orginal document so don't know their relationship to each other. Their names do not appear in the 1860 Census.
In the Hopkins private family graveyard on the original farm land are 2 stones simply marked JH and SH. I'm wondering if that could be for Jordan & Silas.
