1. i. CHEROKEE2 INDIAN, b. Bef. 1755. Generation No. 2 2. CHEROKEE2 INDIAN (BIGGERS1) was born Bef. 1755. She met COL. NICOLAS LEWIS. Notes for CHEROKEE INDIAN: Name may have been "Cate/Crate", born abt. 1747 in VA. Source: James D. Evans-A man named Nicolas Lewis, who was an advisor and close friend of Thomas Jeffersn, and managed Jefferson's properties when he was away from home for extended periods was commissioned by him to command a company of Minutemen against the Cherokee Indians in 1776. It is possible that Hannah's mother was a captive of that or later engagement because Hannah was reputed to be of Indian origin, a slave of the Lewis family and rupted to be fathered by Nicholas. With the prominent nose displayed in a tiny type photo of Mariah, the supposition is easy to believe. That characteristic has been passed down to several members of the family and relatives. Notes for COL. NICOLAS LEWIS: From the records of James D. With prominent nose displayed in the tinytype phot of Mariah, the supposition is easy to belive. That caracteristic has been passed down to several member of our own family and relatives. Nicholas Lewis with Thomas Jefferson brought Meriweather Lewis (his brother Williams' child whom he cared for from the age five, after William died), to Jefferson's attention resulting in his being selected for the famous Lewis and Clark Expediton. #D:I02763 #Name: Col. Evans. Among the Nicholas Lewis children was a daughter named Mildred who married a David Wood in 1781. At some point Mildred was given the slavesm Hannah. Dower rightes that the time, dictated that everything a wife brought to the marriage became the property of her husband, but if he died first then ownership revert to her. That was the case here. David Wood died in 1818 and Mildred regained ownership of Hannah, who was listed on a slave dower document, at that time, as being 28 years of age with a young daughter, Mariah, who supposedly was fathered by David Wood. Notes for PERKINS EVANS/IVANS/IVENS/IVINS: From the records of James D. Evans: The first reference found of him comes in the census of 1870 listed as Mariah's husband. I have found no other mention of him in any papers, including slave inventories. Daddy said Calvin knew nothing about him or where he was from and seldom mentioned him. If you are familar with Civil War History you know that at the time the slaves were freed, they went to live wherever they could. People who had something or someplace, shared with those who didn't. A lot of families were formed in this manner and many thousands of them were not married. To rectify that problem, in Virginia and maybe other states, those persons living in the same household were considered legally married. A guess is that Perkins Evans came after Dr. Rogers died in 1863, operated the blacksmith shop, took over training the boys, etc. He and Mariah may have just used the "Evans" name for convenience. It was hard times and survival dictated doing what was necessary. Perkins' death certificate, dated 1888, contains no relevant information about his background and he is listed as a widower when we know that Mariah didn't die until 1902. According to my first cousin, Thomas, his father, Angus, always used to say that according to Calvin, their last name should have been Wood(s), if not Rogers.
