I’ve had some success in posting on surname, state, and county message boards where my ancestors resided. I’ve examined county records for bills of sale and wills. I have found some on-line. Private slave owning family records are where you are most likely to find slave names, given names that is. So, that means researching the slave owners as if they were *your* family!!
Freedman bank records can provide some clues.Ancestry.com is offering access to those records (and others) free for month of Feb. at:

You can examine the 1850 and 1860 slave schedule and compare the ages of the slaves on those to your ancestors on the 1870 census.
