Searching for info on a Joseph Moody of New Hampshire who fought in Ticonderoga, NY during the French & Indian wars. He was in Gen. Jeffery Amherst's company. It appears that Joseph contracted smallpox while in his service and brought it home to his family. He died before 1762, and several of his children also died from the disease as the town petitioned his wife and remaining families for compensation for having to pay for his and his families medical and burial expenses. Joseph's wife's name was Mary LEAVITT (seen spelled many various ways in the old records).
It looks like Joseph finished his service, but I'm not sure about that as I can't seem to find anything else about him. I have very limited resources here though.
I believe that one of his remaining sons (that survived the smallpox), perhaps a son named James Moody fought, ironically in Ticonderoga during the Rev. War as there is a James Moody who re-enlisted in Capt. Daniel Lane's company there and the records say something to the effect of his "cathching up" with his company there.
I am trying to locate the Parents of my own 5th grt. grandfather whose name was James MOODY. He was born c1745 to around 1753 and possibly Maine or NH. He was married in Jan. 1774 in Buxton, York Co., Maine which was then called Narragansett Township No.1 which was lands given to survivors of men who served in the Fr.& In. Wars, thus my thinking that my James came there to make a claim. However, just because he married there doesn't mean he stayed there and I can find hide nor hair of him in Buxton or anywhere else in Maine for that matter. There is a James Moody however in Essex Co., NY who could be his son - James Moody, Jr. b.c1776.
In Sept. 1785, James, Sr.'s (for clarity only) wife Elizabeth (Donnell) Moody came back to Buxton and re-confirmed her faith in the Church of Christ in Buxton where she and James were married, and also her 3 children, Sarah, James, Jr. and Joseph MOODY were baptized with her.
She was referred to by that date as "Widow" Elizabeth MOODY, so I am guessing that her husband James died either as a result of his service in the Rev. War or from sickness afterwards or otherwise.
If anyone here has any info on the Joseph Moody of New Hampshire who served in Gen. Amherst's Comp. it might be a huge help in helping me make a connection to the James Moody in or of Buxton, York Co., Maine and the Ticonderoga, NY link as well.
Thank You for anything at all.
