Scottish Emigrants to America

I am seeking info on a specific family, from Scotland, who traveled to America in the early 1600's and provided military services. One date I have seen, but, not been able to prove, was 1610.

The surname had many variations; McCutchin, Scutchin, Scotchings, Cutchin, etc. The given name is Samuel, or, Thomas, or, both.

I am totally clueless in my search. The info I've gathered is very limited and I don't know sources to look in which are really good and provide me with the military info I need. I'm at a dead end!!

Could anyone suggest military resources I might use? Also, if you prefer, you are welcome to email me at home: hargettcecil@windstream.net

Thank you so much!
